Awards ceremony Tierra 47 _ Competition.
Celso Duarte arrives to Tierra 47 accompanied by his regular trio, composed of Juan Duarte (guitars) and Violeta Ortega (voice, jarana and zapateado).
The trio’s beauty rises in large part from their truly virtuous execution of traditional music and the bold experimental fusion they produce using Jarocho rhythms, jazz and elements of World Music.
Celso Duarte throws his doors wide open, inviting the audience to partake on a journey from the southeast of Mexico and the Son Jarocho, to the rhythms of the Paraguayan Galopa, or the Brazilian Samba. During this voyage, their musical instruments acquire an extraordinary versatility rarely seen on stage.
Park Stickney brings to Tierra 47 his extraordinary project as an electric harp soloist, as always, pushing the envelope of the harp’s boundaries with melodic joy, engaging conversation and notes of humor.
A magnificent pedal harp jazz player also, Park Stickney is perhaps the most wide-ranging harpist of our time. His project is a wake-up call for all those who thought the harp was just sweet glissandos and quiet spikes.
Spontaneity is perhaps the word that best describes Park. Not only does he improvise with music itself, but also with the moment. Whether performing his own compositions, jazz standards, or classic harp repertoire, Park has the delightful capacity to stamp each interpretation with his very own personal seal. All this while occasionally engaging the audience in some way or another, exuding joy and making them interact with his performance, and truly become part of what is happening on stage. There is no harp festival without his presence.
