Wherever there is a human being, there’s music. Opening with this reflection is how Francis Wolff will greet the audience of Madrid in his usual rich yet accessible tone, which has already been enjoyed by music fans in the universities of New York, Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Rio de Janeiro and Warwick.
Why is it that, always and everywhere, there is music, instead of nothing, music instead of just sounds (words, screams, silences of nature and man)?
Why, then, music? In answering these questions, we enter the realm of philosophy and even metaphysics. The journey is dizzying, but Francis Wolff will take care of us during the ride, revealing why music is beautiful and why it exists.
Wolff has no equal analyzing the mysteries of swing in jazz, or the desperation that Janis Joplin puts into the words of Summertime (” Summertime, time, time, child, the living’s easy…”). In this conference we will absorb a music lesson as well as a message in philosophy, but also a passion for understanding humanity and its relationship to the world.
Why music? For nothing, for everything, to “leave the cave we do nothing but live in”, to enjoy “sounds as essential as words, or as pleasant as the sea waves, a cricket’s song, or the laughter of lovers.”
