The Spirit of Nicanor Zabaleta
Tierra 47 is designed to be a meeting and exchange space for the international harp community.
The festival’s first edition seeks to capture the spirit of Nicanor Zabaleta (San Sebastián, Spain, 1907 – San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1993), and continue his journey of creating a singular Latin American harp trend that joins the lore of Folk harp – which has been taught for four hundred years without a single score – with the European teachings developed on the academic harp.
The artist in him is as much, or even larger, than the harpist.
Maurice Ravel on Nicanor Zabaleta
Ángel Padilla Crespo, whose presence was scheduled at this opening concert, died on July 20 in Mexico. The harpists Baltazar Juárez and Isabelle Perrin, also participating in this concert, will pay a tribute to him during their respective perfomances. The Artistic Committee of the Festival of Arpa Tierra 47, of which he was a member and founder, expresses his most sincere condolences to the entire harp community and to the family and friends of the Mexican harpist.
